Ukraine Frontline Capabilities Restored as Satellite Speeds Hit 250 mph
The return to full bandwidth removes a major bottleneck for drone defense and logistics, following a week of caps that officials linked to direct U.S. government oversight.

Ukraine's digital defense infrastructure has returned to full capacity, a shift that analysts say removes a critical bottleneck for real-time battlefield coordination and drone interception. The restoration follows a period of reduced performance that officials in Kyiv and Washington debated in public statements.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the change on X on Saturday, stating that Starlink and Starshield operations had been restored to pre-restriction levels. He noted that speeds were now where they needed to be. The Defense Ministry confirmed the recovery through its monitoring systems, reporting stable connectivity above 250 miles per hour. During the previous week, speeds had been capped at roughly 100 miles per hour, a reduction the ministry said hampered drone interception and mission execution.
The slowdown began more than a week before the announcement. On Oct. 14, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk posted on X that Starshield is owned and controlled by the U.S. government. He stated that limits on speed or usage are decided by the U.S. military and ultimately the President. Zelenskyy later told NBC's Meet the Press that Ukrainian officials believed the U.S. government was behind the restrictions, saying SpaceX acted on a message from the American government.
Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara attributed the resolution to direct dialogue led by Zelenskyy. He emphasized that the result is important for the front line, service members, drone operations, logistics, and communications. Zelenskyy thanked all Americans, specifically naming members of Congress, the State Department, and President Trump. The Starlink network is central to Ukraine's defense, supporting drone operations, logistics for food and water, and communications along the front line.
The Trump administration has denied interfering with Ukraine's access to the system. Speaking to reporters on Friday, President Trump declined to identify who ordered the restrictions. He said he would not tell reporters if he knew. He also defended Musk, describing him as a fair person whom he knows very well.
The restoration occurs as U.S.-led peace efforts advance. Russia has agreed to a trilateral meeting with Ukraine and the United States next month. The two sides also agreed to a localized ceasefire in the Russian-occupied southern city of Oleshky. The White House said First Lady Melania Trump brokered the deal, which includes humanitarian aid and civilian evacuation. Fighting continues elsewhere, with Ukraine attacking a chemical plant in Tolyatti and a Russian drone striking a residential building in Kyiv's Obolon District on Saturday.
