Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 on Sunday night to end the Catalan club's nine-game winning streak in La Liga.

Kylian Mbappe scored both goals for the visitors, a performance that also marked his 100th goal for Real Madrid across all competitions.

The result at Camp Nou gave Real their first win against Barcelona this season and secured bragging rights in the all-time head-to-head record, which now stands at 107 wins for Real and 106 for Barcelona.

Before this match, Barcelona had won nine consecutive league games and were poised to break the record for the best start to a season in Spanish top-flight history, a mark set by Real Madrid in 1968-69.

The defeat was Barcelona's second in a row, following a loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League earlier in the week.

Mbappe, 27, had already scored 13 goals this season before the match. His brace in the Clasico brought his total to 14, keeping him as the second-highest scorer in La Liga this term.

The French forward is one of the leading candidates for the Ballon d'Or award, which will be presented at a ceremony in London on Monday.

Real Madrid has won five of its last six matches in all competitions, a run that includes three league victories and two Champions League wins.

The team is currently third in the La Liga table with 24 points after 10 matches, trailing Barcelona by three points and sitting one point behind second-placed Atletico Madrid.

Jose Mourinho, who returned to manage Real Madrid after two trophyless seasons for the club, celebrated the win with a knee slide on the pitch.

Mourinho stated that the team plays to win the championship rather than just individual matches, noting that a win at Camp Nou without subsequent results would count for nothing.

The manager has not won a league title since leading Chelsea to the Premier League championship in 2014-15, but his return to the club came 13 years after his first spell ended.
