Tampa Bay Rays fans arrived at Tropicana Field with high hopes for a World Series run, only to watch their team fall further behind in the series. An eight-run fifth inning by the opposing team effectively sealed the outcome of Game 3, leaving the Rays one loss away from being eliminated.
The Milwaukee Brewers currently hold a 3-0 series lead. While the loss on the field was the immediate cause for frustration, many spectators argue that the team's struggles point to deeper financial and strategic issues.
Jeff Ballenger, a U.S. Coast Guard member stationed in Alaska, traveled from Lakeland to attend Game 3. He criticized the team's current approach, stating, “As a Rays fan, this sucks. We definitely need more investment in the team. We need hitting. We need hitting.” Ballenger suggested that an additional $50 million in payroll would allow the franchise to compete more effectively and advocated for increased playing time for young prospects.
The defeat has cast doubt even on local baseball players. Ethan Frame, a University of Tampa athlete, remarked, “I feel like we’re a little bit out of it.” His teammate, Evan Peerless, acknowledged the difficulty of the situation but maintained faith in the team's potential. “I mean, it’s definitely going to be really hard,” Peerless said. “I think if there’s any team that can do it, it’s definitely the Rays.”
Despite the bleak outlook, Ballenger remains confident in manager Kevin Cash. He expressed hope that the team could stage a surprise victory run. “Maybe we'll go on a 4-0 streak and we'll shock the world,” he said. The Rays will take the field against Milwaukee in Game 4 on Tuesday night at Tropicana Field.
