Bayern Munich holds the Bundesliga title with a one-point lead over Freiburg, a margin that defines the stakes for Sunday's match. The club will send the side into that game without head coach Vincent Kompany, who is hospitalized for a virus and expected to miss weeks of competition.

Director of Sport Max Eberl confirmed Kompany's stable condition at a news conference on Saturday. He stated that medical examinations are ongoing to identify the specific nature of the 40-year-old's illness. Eberl emphasized that the club is not setting a recovery timeline yet, noting that the absence will be measured in weeks rather than days.

"Vinnie will be given all the time he needs. We're not starting to put together any timeframes," Eberl said. He added that the club must first understand the problem before calmly discussing recovery. The decision was made not to seek a postponement for the Bundesliga fixture at Freiburg. Eberl argued that a strong performance and a positive result would be the best way to aid Kompany's recovery.

Assistant coach Aaron Danks, who is English, will take charge for the match against Freiburg. Danks led the news conference in Kompany's place and revealed he spoke briefly with the former Manchester City and Belgium captain on Friday. Danks said the call was solely to check on Kompany's health, with no football conversations taking place.

"I explained to him that we wouldn't be having no football conversations. It was just checking in on his health and making sure he's OK," Danks said. He added that all football operations are now in the coaching staff's hands, and the team will work together to keep the club moving forward.

Kompany had returned to the dugout for Wednesday's home match against Arsenal despite missing the pre-match news conference due to the virus. He later admitted to ignoring warning signs from his body. "I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course, I didn't listen to my body, and then at some point, my body just said, 'Enough is enough!'

Bayern's second team match was postponed on Friday following Kompany's collapse on the training pitch. Danks also confirmed that Germany captain Joshua Kimmich will miss the Freiburg game, as he has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday. The defending champions will next play in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid in Madrid on November 3.
