The Golden Eagles of Clovis West have won the Central Section championship for 14 consecutive years. That unbroken streak in high school girls basketball now follows Ryleigh Schoonover as she begins her college career at Fresno State.

Schoonover is part of a freshman class entering the program's first season under the current roster structure. She chose to stay within the valley rather than travel elsewhere for her collegiate play. Her former high school coach, Craig Campbell, noted that the program aims to remain competitive annually, stating, "We want to be good every year." He added that while they may not win every title, the goal is to stay near the top of the standings.

Fresno State coach Ryan McCarthy identified Schoonover as the top local talent in the 2026 class. "In my opinion, Riley was the best player in the area for her class of 2026," McCarthy said. He observed that she immediately demonstrated that quality upon joining the team. McCarthy noted that her background in a winning high school program sets a high baseline for her performance on the court.

Schoonover said wearing the Fresno State uniform holds specific meaning for players from the region. "To wear that valley 'V' on your chest, it's something different," she said. She noted that observers from outside the area often miss this local connection. She credited Campbell for preparing her for the pace of college basketball, describing the standard at both levels as consistent.

The Bulldogs are preparing to compete in the Pac-12 conference this season. Their schedule begins with a home game against UC Merced in less than two weeks. Schoonover will play her first collegiate game at the Save Mart Center. The team is entering the season with the goal of contending for a conference championship.

Campbell believes Schoonover has not yet reached her full potential. "I think that's one of the things that's so exciting for Coach McCarthy and the staff is she's just scratching the surface on what a gifted player she could be for them," he said. Schoonover is currently practicing with the team ahead of the season opener.
