Elena Rybakina reached the final of the Ningbo Open on Saturday, securing a second consecutive title defense. The world number one defeated sixth seed Diana Shnaider with a score of 6-3, 7-5. The win places Rybakina in her fourth final of the season and sets the stage for a matchup against a familiar opponent.
The match required patience from the defending champion. Rybakina saved 11 set points in the opening set before closing it out. She noted the struggle in post-match remarks, stating that she was playing the first balls well but could not close the game. Shnaider, ranked 13th in the world, produced strong rallies and kept the set going longer than Rybakina preferred. The Kazakh player said she was glad the set went her way.
The second set mirrored the tension of the first. Rybakina broke Shnaider’s serve to lead 4-3, but she was broken to love in the 10th game. The 27-year-old recovered with powerful groundstrokes to retake the lead in the next game. She then served with more confidence to end the match. Rybakina acknowledged that Shnaider’s left-handed style created specific challenges. She mentioned that switching patterns during rallies was difficult against a left-hander.
Rybakina’s final opponent will be Leylah Fernandez of Canada. The unseeded Fernandez won her semifinal against Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic, also by the score of 6-3, 7-5. Both players share a left-handed game, presenting a similar tactical test for Rybakina. The final is scheduled for Sunday at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre in Ningbo.
This tournament follows a rough stretch for the Australian Open and US Open champion. She suffered a heavy loss in Beijing and withdrew from Wuhan due to a foot injury. Now, she turns her attention to the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo next week. After that event, she will begin defending her WTA Finals title at Indian Wells on November 8.
Rybakina remains focused on the immediate task. She described the prospect of winning back-to-back titles as never easy. She said she would fight and give her all in Sunday’s match.
