For the first time in days, Ukrainian military units have regained full access to high-speed satellite communications. As of the morning of 24 October, restrictions on the Starlink and Starshield systems were lifted, allowing data speeds to return to pre-disruption levels. This change directly impacts frontline operations, enabling the smoother transport of supplies and the more effective deployment of drone assets.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the public via video to confirm the return to normal operations. He stated that the systems are now running at the speeds they were capable of before the limitations were imposed. Zelenskyy noted that the recovery began overnight, with speeds reaching the required threshold for military use by morning. He emphasized that this development is critical for maintaining logistical flow and for defending against fast-moving, jet-powered Shahed drones.

Technical verification of the restored speeds occurred before the president's public statement. Ukrainian defense forces and experts from the Ministry of Defence initially recorded both systems operating at speeds above 161 km/h. Subsequently, the Ministry of Defence issued an official confirmation that the connection was stable and registering speeds above 400 km/h. These figures indicate that the satellite networks are now functioning at a capacity suitable for heavy military data traffic.

The recent disruption had caused significant operational challenges. A few days earlier, Zelenskyy reported that Starlink and Starshield equipment had been limited to speeds between 130 and 161 km/h in several sectors along the line of contact. This reduction in bandwidth interfered with standard logistics and constrained Ukraine's ability to utilize its drone fleet effectively. The restoration of full speeds resolves these specific technical bottlenecks.

The incident also generated political attention regarding the decision-making process behind the bandwidth limits. On 16 October, US President Donald Trump claimed that the White House had not been involved in limiting Ukraine's use of the satellite systems. This statement came as reports emerged suggesting a more direct role for private sector leadership in the matter.

According to a report by The Telegraph, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk approached Trump with the idea of restricting the bandwidth of the Starlink and Starshield satellite networks used by the Ukrainian military. This context adds a layer of complexity to the recent technical adjustments, highlighting the intersection of private infrastructure and national defense strategies.

With the restrictions lifted, the focus now shifts to sustaining the restored connection. The Ministry of Defence has confirmed the current stability of the link, but ongoing monitoring will be essential to ensure that the speeds remain consistent across all affected sectors. The successful recovery of these systems marks a return to the operational baseline that Ukrainian forces require for their current defensive and offensive strategies.
