The Triangle restaurant market is expanding in October with new chain entrants and updated international culinary recognition. These developments coincide with a busy calendar of local food events and festivals scheduled for the final weeks of the year.

At the 2026 Michelin Guide American South ceremony in Nashville on Wednesday, three Triangle establishments received new Bib Gourmand designations. Ajja in Raleigh, Ideal's in Durham, and Tesoro in Carrboro earned the distinction. Tesoro operates as an 18-seat restaurant focused on pasta. Five other local spots, including Prime Barbecue, Mala Pata, and Sam Jones BBQ, retained their Bib Gourmand status. Sixteen additional venues, such as Brewery Bhavana, Poole's, Stanbury, and The Fearrington House Restaurant, kept their Michelin recommended listings.

Maggiano's Little Italy will occupy the former Brio Italian Grille space at Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh. This location will serve as the second Maggiano's in the region, following the existing branch at Streets at Southpoint in Durham. The chain specializes in large, family-style portions. Management has not announced a specific opening date for the new location.

Millie's Homemade Ice Cream, a franchise originating in Pittsburgh, plans to open its first North Carolina shop at 325 Blake St. in City Market. The site is adjacent to Blackbird Books and Coffee. The Triangle Business Journal reports a target opening date before the end of 2026. South Block, a concept known for acai bowls and smoothies, is also entering the market. The brand currently holds three locations in the Charlotte area. Its new Raleigh site will be at 4121 Main at North Hills St., next to bartaco. RALtoday notes that no opening date has been set for this expansion.

In Apex, Grain & Berry recently opened at 2017 Creekside Landing Drive in Beaver Creek Crossings. This marks its second North Carolina location after Holly Springs. Winston's Grille in Raleigh is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Wil O'Neal and Charles Winston Jr. founded the establishment in 1986. In Durham, M Kikkei, formerly M Pocha, will host an invitation-only soft opening on October 24. The grand opening follows on October 29 at 101 E. Chapel Hill St. The restaurant features Nikkei cuisine, which combines Japanese techniques with Peruvian ingredients, and represents the seventh concept in the Mpire group.

Other regional changes include the opening of a Tavolo Italian Eatery in MOSAIC at Chatham Park in Pittsboro. Gandy Coffee House is expected to open in early 2027 inside the historic Captain J. F. Alston House at 14 N. Small St. On the closure front, Sushioki in Research Triangle Park shut permanently after eight years of operation.

The upcoming event schedule includes the inaugural Chapel Hill Biscuit Festival on October 25 at American Legion Post 6. VIP entry begins at 2 p.m., and general admission starts at 3 p.m. Proceeds will support SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals. On October 29, chefs including Sera Cuni of The Root Cellar will host a Yellowstone Dinner at Holl & Stone Farm in Garner. Preeti Waas will hold a Super Spooky Sandwich popup on October 31 from noon to 4 p.m. at 202 N. Corcoran St. in Durham, with the menu available for pickup on October 24.

In November, the Chefs for Change Gala & Auction takes place at The Cookery on November 5 to benefit Families Moving Forward. Botiwalla will host a Diwali party at Iron Works on November 6. The third Rawleigh Oyster Fest, themed Smoke & Shuck, is scheduled for November 7 at Raleigh Iron Works. This edition adds North Carolina pitmasters for the first time. Organizers introduced a $60 Half Shell ticket that includes nine oysters, two bites, and one drink. The previous two festivals sold out and raised approximately $12,500 combined.

The Trophy Trot 5K returns for its 10th year at Dix Park on Thanksgiving morning, November 26. The event benefits Healing Transitions. Nearly 3,000 participants signed up last year, generating about $60,000 in donations, an increase from $42,000 the prior year. The North Carolina State Fair continues through Sunday. The Food Bank is observing Tackling Hunger Month, noting that more than 600,000 neighbors face uncertainty regarding their next meal. The organization states that every $25 donation provides 75 meals.
