Apple has officially launched its first folding smartphone, the iPhone Duo, priced at $1,999. This entry into the foldable market comes seven years after Samsung pioneered the category with the Galaxy Fold. Early assessments suggest that the extended period of development behind closed doors has resulted in a refined hardware product, though the high price point requires buyers to weigh several new factors before purchase.

The most significant immediate challenge lies in software compatibility. The device features a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inner display, a form factor that is new to the ecosystem. While Apple’s native applications are optimized for this layout, many third-party apps currently display as a narrow central strip with thick black bars on the sides. Major platforms such as Slack, Instagram, DoorDash, and WhatsApp have received updates for iOS 27.1, but interface issues persist in some of these apps. Apple has also shifted navigation elements to the right rail instead of the bottom center. Since the device is currently back-ordered for several weeks, developers may resolve these quirks before units reach many customers.

The hardware design marks a distinct departure from recent iPhone models by omitting Face ID. Instead, the Duo utilizes Touch ID with the sensor located on the right side, likely due to the device’s thin profile. This represents the first return of the fingerprint sensor to a flagship iPhone, a feature that has remained on the iPhone SE, iPads, and MacBooks. The Dynamic Island remains part of the design, relocated to the top-right edge around the outer selfie camera and appearing in the same corner on the inner display during live activities.

Accessory integration presents several practical hurdles. Although the Duo supports MagSafe, it tips to one side when unfolded and attached to car docks or tripods due to uneven weight distribution. Third-party manufacturers may need to develop anti-rotation magnets to address this. Additionally, magnetic wallets extend past the bottom edge because the phone is shorter than standard models, and Apple offers no official solution for this issue.

Photography capabilities offer a notable advantage. Users can utilize the superior rear cameras for selfies while previewing on the outer screen. A specific control allows the full camera app, including modes and Photographic Styles, to appear on the outer display, effectively disabling the inner screen to prevent accidental touches. This feature is distinct from Duo Preview, which shows the viewfinder to the subject, and Kids Cue, which uses Snoopy animations to engage children.

Multitasking functionality allows users to run two apps side by side on the inner display by dragging an app to either side. Tapping the middle bar locks these apps as a pair, making them accessible from the Recent apps menu, though they cannot be saved as a single icon.

Care for the inner display requires attention to detail. Apple describes the matte nano-texture finish as an integral component and warns users against attempting to remove it, as doing so may void the warranty. The company does not address third-party screen protectors, which could impact display performance. Repairs for a damaged finish cost $19 at an Apple Store or authorized provider, or $49 out of warranty. A cracked inner display costs $999 without AppleCare+.

Several conveniences are scheduled for future updates. The keyboard can already be split for easier typing on the wide display. A later update this year will add Reachability, which shifts apps to the left or right rather than pulling them down. Another update will add support for the USB-C Apple Pencil, the only model compatible with the device. This stylus should enhance writing and drawing experiences on the nano-texture screen, though the phone lacks a built-in storage slot for it.
