BYD is set to challenge the ultra-luxury automotive segment with a new flagship electric sedan that will make its global debut in the United Arab Emirates. The move signals a significant strategic shift for the Chinese manufacturer, which has traditionally focused on the mass market.

Hu Xiaoqing, the general manager of BYD's Yangwang division, confirmed this week that the launch will occur in the UAE rather than in China. While a specific date has not yet been announced, the vehicle is expected to make its official debut later this month. The decision to debut the car abroad first highlights the company's ambition to establish a premium international presence before returning to its home market.

The new model is designed to rival the Rolls-Royce Phantom in size and stature. Local reports indicate the sedan will measure approximately 5,500 mm, or 216 inches, in length. This dimension places it in the same category as other top-tier executive sedans from brands like Mercedes-Maybach and Bentley. The vehicle will feature rear-hinged coach doors, a design element that is a first for BYD, further emphasizing its luxury positioning.

The car represents a dramatic leap for a company best known for affordable vehicles. BYD currently sells the Seagull, a small hatchback, for under $10,000 in China. The new sedan, however, is expected to start at a price point of 2 million yuan, which is equivalent to roughly $300,000. This pricing strategy places the vehicle well above the current top of the Yangwang lineup.

Yangwang serves as the technology showcase for BYD, sitting at the top of the company's brand hierarchy alongside Denza and FangChengBao. Previous models in this segment utilized BYD's quad-motor e4 platform, which produces 1,300 horsepower, and the DiSus-X intelligent body control system. This system allows vehicles to perform unique maneuvers, such as driving on three wheels or dancing. The new sedan is rumored to be the first model to utilize the company's solid-state batteries.

Stella Li, BYD's executive vice president, stated last month that the company's first solid-state battery vehicle would debut in 2027. However, the presence of this new sedan at a BYD Flash Charging station suggests it may support megawatt flash charging capabilities. Zheng Yu, the executive general manager of Yangwang, described the vehicle as featuring unprecedented disruptive technology, though he did not provide specific technical details.

The company has expanded its product range significantly in recent years, moving from entry-level electric vehicles to three-row flagship SUVs, pickup trucks, and electric supercars. The new sedan joins a growing family of vehicles under the BYD name, including the Dynasty and Ocean series. This broad expansion allows BYD to target diverse market segments with specialized platforms and technologies.

The introduction of this flagship sedan places BYD in direct competition with long-standing luxury marques. By targeting the UAE market first, the company may be aiming to leverage the region's appetite for high-end vehicles. The success of this model could define the trajectory of BYD's premium strategy in the coming years.
