Two Marion County players will travel to Jacksonville on Dec. 15 and 16 for the USA Pool League statewide championship. David Ray and Keith Waddle are paired to compete in the Scotch doubles 8-ball division. The tournament offers cash prizes to the winners.
Waddle, who has played billiards for approximately 15 years, uses the game to manage stress after work. He expressed gratitude to the North Central Florida USA Pool League for providing a pathway to state competition.
Jenn Hamilton, the league operator, explained that the organization serves players who prefer call pocket rules. The league utilizes a handicap system to allow newer participants to compete against experienced players. This system ensures that poor shots do not determine the outcome of a match.
Hamilton noted that the league sets aside 50% of player dues for national competitions in Las Vegas. This financial structure creates a direct path for members to advance beyond the local level.
The league is currently recruiting players for a Winter Session that starts Nov. 18. Games are held every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Good Time Bar & Grill in Belleview. The venue is located at 8921 E. Highway 25 in Belleview.
The format is call pocket 8-ball, with every match handicapped using the FargoRate rating system. This rating is used by pool tournaments nationwide and contributes to each player's official Fargo Rating. New players and those without league experience are welcome to join.
