Two Israeli soldiers died and three others were wounded in a 20-minute firefight at a checkpoint near Hebron on Friday. The engagement ended when troops killed two gunmen who had opened fire from behind concrete barriers.

Bulldozers began flattening homes in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred on Friday afternoon. The Israeli military is forcing hundreds of Palestinians out of the area. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the site and delivered a televised address. He vowed to demolish the neighborhood and change it completely.

Netanyahu described the planned military action in the West Bank as being on a scale not seen since the Six Day War. That conflict ended almost 60 years ago when Israel first occupied the territory. He compared the upcoming operation to last year's assault on two Palestinian refugee camps in the northern West Bank. That campaign displaced tens of thousands of people. Human Rights Watch characterized those expulsions as war crimes, a claim Israel rejects.

The local human rights group B'Tselem urged foreign governments to intervene. The organization warned against another wave of ethnic cleansing and war crimes. The United Nations Human Rights Office for the occupied Palestinian territory has described the current situation as a new level of dehumanization of Palestinians. Israel has imposed widespread closures in Hebron, the most populous city in the occupied West Bank.

The territory is currently restricted by approximately 925 checkpoints, roadblocks, and earth mounds. This episode follows a recent surge in violence and land seizures by Israeli settlers. Analysts link the size of the government's response to the national elections scheduled for October 27. Polls indicate that Netanyahu and his rival, Gadi Eisenkot, are running neck and neck. Neither currently holds enough support to form a government.

Danny Citrinowicz, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, stated that Netanyahu is positioning himself as the protector of Israel. Citrinowicz said the Prime Minister will take harsh measures to demonstrate support to the public. He labeled the eviction of families from the attackers' neighborhood as collective punishment, noting there is no evidence linking them to the gunmen. Citrinowicz argued that authorities should arrest those planning attacks while helping those who want to live peacefully.

Israel has maintained a heavy military presence in Hebron for years. The checkpoint where the soldiers were killed serves as a major transit point between Palestinian and Israeli areas. The firefight interrupted traffic in the region for several hours. Military officials confirmed that the two gunmen were killed and that no other suspects had been captured as of Friday evening.
