The Florida Panthers defeated the Winnipeg Jets 5-1 on Tuesday night, extending the visitors' winless streak to six games. The result allowed Florida to close out a four-game road trip with two victories after losing its first two contests.
Carter Verhaeghe led the attack with two goals. Matthew Tkachuk provided four assists, while his brother Brady added a goal and two assists. Niko Mikkola contributed one goal and one assist, and Sam Reinhart scored the final goal of the evening. Florida's power play converted three of its five opportunities, marking its 13th man-advantage goal in the last eight games.
Goalkeeper Akira Schmid stopped 24 shots to secure his fourth win in five starts. Seth Jones added three assists for the home team. The Panthers built a 4-1 lead by the 10:18 mark of the first period when Reinhart one-timed a pass from Brady Tkachuk over the shoulder of Winnipeg's goaltender.
Winnipeg's Adam Lowry scored the team's lone goal. It was his second of the season and his first short-handed. Clay Stevenson made 19 saves for the Jets, who have not won since their early-season stretch ended. Their power play has gone without a success in its last 14 attempts across five games.
The Tkachuk brothers have combined for 35 points in the first 13 games of the season. The Jets have scored more than three goals only once this year, a 5-2 win over Minnesota on October 13. The team returns to Florida on Friday to play the Panthers again, following a trip to Tampa Bay on Thursday.
