The central conflict of the incident was a powerful underwater current that separated a family from their children in the waters off North Bimini. A British mother, 36, lost her life on Tuesday while attempting to retrieve her two sons from the water.
Royal Bahamas Police Force officials stated that the family was snorkeling near the southern point of North Bimini with their two sons. A strong current carried both boys away. As the mother attempted to reach them, the current took her as well.
Police reported that the children were eventually rescued from the water. The mother was also pulled from the sea and brought to the North Bimini ferry dock. Officers noted that she was unresponsive upon arrival at the dock.
In a social media statement, the police force explained that officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10:00 a.m. The report indicated a woman was unresponsive at the ferry dock. By the time officers arrived, she had been moved to the local clinic for medical treatment.
A local doctor pronounced her dead at the clinic despite resuscitation efforts. Police confirmed that CPR was administered at the ferry dock before her transfer. The force stated that foul play is not suspected at this time and that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed its awareness of the death. A spokesperson said their thoughts were with the family and that officials are in contact with local authorities to provide support. Bimini is the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland, situated between Andros and Miami.
The investigation remains active as forensic teams prepare for the post-mortem examination. The family has been placed in contact with consular officials in Nassau.
