A British mother died in the Bahamas after a strong current swept her two sons away from a snorkeling site near Bimini's southern point, police said. The Royal Bahamas Police Force said the 36-year-old woman, believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, was carried off as she moved to reach the boys. Both children were later rescued from the water.
The woman was snorkeling with her husband and their two sons when the current took the children. She was pulled from the water afterward and brought to the North Bimini Ferry Dock, where officers from the Alice Town police station were notified shortly after 10am Tuesday that a woman there was unresponsive. Officers who arrived found she had already been taken to the local clinic, where a doctor pronounced her dead despite efforts to save her.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death, and investigators on the island have opened a file on the case.
A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas." The spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to her family.
Police said officers were called to the ferry dock after reports of an unresponsive woman at the scene. The woman had been rescued from the water after being swept away, and CPR was administered at the dock before she was transported to the clinic.
