Apple TV subscribers in the United States gained access to Formula 1 coverage with Dolby Atmos audio on Friday, October 23. The audio upgrade coincides with the upcoming United States Grand Prix, which marks the first Formula 1 race broadcast in this spatial audio format.
Apple and Dolby Laboratories announced the partnership earlier in the month. The companies stated that the addition of Dolby Atmos would allow viewers to hear distinct layers of sound, including team radio, commentary, and engine noise. Apple claims the setup places the audience in the middle of the race weekend, from on-track battles to pit lane activity. The service pairs this audio with Dolby Vision for enhanced color and clarity.
The race weekend schedule provides multiple viewing options for those who missed the first practice session. Practice 2 occurred on Friday, October 23, at 5 p.m. ET. Practice 3 is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, at 1:30 p.m. ET. Qualifying follows on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET. The main race takes place on Sunday, October 25, at 4 p.m. ET.
Apple is hosting a live screening of the Sunday race at its Domain NORTHSIDE store in Austin, Texas. This location also served as the site for the iPhone Duo launch on Friday, where Apple CEO John Ternus and retail chief Deirdre O'Brien were present. The event ties the broadcast upgrade to a physical retail experience for fans in the Austin area.
The company updated Apple Maps to assist fans navigating the Circuit of The Americas. The Detailed City Experience for Austin now includes a 3D map of the track. This digital guide features turn numbers, grandstand locations, and other landmarks to help users find their way around the venue.
Apple TV is available for $14.99 per month or as part of the Apple One bundle. The streaming service includes other titles such as Ted Lasso, Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking, and Silo.
