A writer at 9to5Google reported on October 23, 2026, that runners are using Meta smart glasses to record road crossings as a safety measure.

The practice began when Nick, the author, started running this summer. They described feeling unsafe when crossing streets, even at marked crosswalks, and often speeding up to avoid oncoming cars. This anxiety led to a simple question: how could a pedestrian document an incident without holding a phone?

Holding a phone or using an armband holster proved too slow for quick reactions. Instead, Nick relied on the camera built into their Meta glasses, which they already wore to film clips for Strava with smartwatch health stats overlaid. The setup allows Nick to start recording video in less than a second when a vehicle approaches.

The process is manual and straightforward. Nick uses Meta Nova and Oakley Meta HSTN models for regular runs. When a car gets close, they hold the camera button to begin recording and press it again after crossing the road to stop. The glasses are configured to save footage in three-minute segments, ensuring a recording is unlikely to end before an incident concludes. Files remain on the device until it syncs with a paired phone.

Nick described the system as effective insurance. They noted that they would likely choose a pair of glasses with a camera if buying new ones today, despite some criticism of the feature. For other runners interested in the method, Nick recommended the Oakley Meta HSTN for its fit and style. For a lower cost, Nick suggested the standard Meta-branded pairs, stating there is no functional difference among the latest models. Rokid AI Glasses were cited as the best non-Meta alternative.

The reporting highlights a shift in how runners document their environment, turning a consumer electronics feature into a practical tool for road safety.
