Apple will release iOS 27.2 next week, marking the first major iPhone software update since 27.1 was restricted to the iPhone Duo. The new build introduces three distinct changes to core applications, expanding camera functionality in FaceTime, restructuring the Apple Podcasts queue, and bringing user profiles to the Apple TV app on iPhone for the first time.
The update extends Dual Capture, a feature introduced in iOS 27, from one-on-one video calls to Group FaceTime sessions. On compatible hardware, the system allows the front and rear cameras to operate simultaneously. Users activate the mode by tapping the Flip button, which brings the rear camera online while keeping the front camera active. This capability previously required a private call but will now function within group conversations.
Apple Podcasts receives a layout overhaul that divides the Up Next section at the top of the Home tab into two separate lists. The first, labeled New Episodes, replaces the existing Up Next queue and aggregates the latest releases from subscribed shows. Directly below it sits a new Continue Playing section, which consolidates all shows that a listener has started but not finished. This change aims to reduce clutter and help users track their listening history more effectively.
The Apple TV app gains support for user profiles, a feature previously limited to tvOS on Apple TV hardware. Upon launching the app after the update, users will encounter a profile selection screen, which can be disabled if preferred. The app adjusts its content recommendations based on the active profile. When a child's profile is selected, the interface displays only age-appropriate series and movies from Apple, filtering out unsuitable material.
According to 9to5Mac, these changes represent the most significant updates in the 27.2 cycle. The outlet noted that the new podcast layout addresses long-standing criticism of the previous interface as confusing. The introduction of profiles on iPhone ensures that viewing queues remain organized for multiple users within a household.
The software update includes new features across six iPhone apps in total. While iOS 27.1 was limited to a specific device, 27.2 serves as the broader release for the current iPhone lineup. The update is scheduled to begin rolling out to users next week.
