Anthropic Backers Hold Stakes Worth Billions Ahead of Potential $2 Trillion Listing
Early and late-stage investors in the AI giant are sitting on massive paper wealth as the company nears a public debut.

Two trillion dollars. That is the price tag attached to the anticipated public listing of Anthropic later this year. The artificial intelligence giant is poised to stage one of the most significant market debuts in recent memory. A successful debut would send shockwaves through the financial sector and reshape the landscape for technology valuations.
The numbers behind this potential windfall are staggering for the venture capital community. Even before the official stock exchange listing, the private market valuation for Anthropic has already surged. The company was last valued at $965 billion in a recent private round. This figure represents a massive jump from earlier funding stages and sets a high bar for the public offering.
For the investors who backed the company early on, the returns have been exponential. The stakes held by various venture capital firms and individual backers now total billions of dollars. These figures are based on the company's most recent private market pricing. The data highlights just how lucrative the AI sector has become for those who got in on the ground floor.
Eric Schmidt stands out as a notable example of an early win. The former Google chief executive officer invested in the Series A round back in 2021. At that time, the startup was valued at just $461 million. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt's initial bet has paid off handsomely. He currently holds roughly 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion.
Later-stage investors have also seen substantial gains, though their entry points were much higher. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a massive $6 billion check to Anthropic last year. This investment came when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That late-stage bet is now worth $17 billion. There is a strong possibility that this value could double once the IPO takes place.
Menlo Ventures played a pivotal role in the company's growth by leading the Series D round. The firm has poured more than $1 billion into Anthropic over time. Their cumulative investment has grown into a stake that is currently valued at $14 billion. This position solidifies Menlo as one of the most heavily invested firms in the AI lab's history.
Sequoia entered the fray more recently, backing the AI lab for the first time earlier this year. At the time of their entry, the company was valued at $380 billion. The firm invested $3 billion to secure approximately 1% ownership. Despite the high entry price, Sequoia has already more than doubled its investment. The rapid appreciation underscores the intense demand for equity in top-tier AI companies.
Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, made its move during the 2023 Series C round. The firm initially invested $35 million at that stage. It subsequently funneled an additional $400 million into the company. This combined investment has resulted in a stake that is now worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm.
Spark Capital holds a unique position as the only known venture capital firm with a board seat at Anthropic. They invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round. At that time, the company was valued at $5 billion. That initial position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold. The current value of their stake stands at $7 billion, marking one of the most dramatic returns in the recent funding rounds.
As Anthropic moves closer to its public debut, these figures illustrate the high stakes involved. The potential $2 trillion valuation would further inflate these numbers for all holders. The transition from private to public markets will be a critical moment for these investors. Their financial positions will become publicly traded assets, subject to the volatility and scrutiny of the open stock market.
